Adaptation
A trait that helps an organism survive in its environment. Adaptation. An adaptation is a trait that helps a living thing change over time to better survive where it lives.
Instinct
The pattern of behavior with which an animal is born. Instinct. Instinct is an automatic response or behavior present in animals that doesn't need to be learned.
Learned behavior
A behavior that is learned from experience. Learned behavior. In science, learned behavior refers to actions or reactions that organisms acquire through interactions with their environment rather than innate instincts.
Fossil
The preserved traces and remains of an organism that lived long ago. Fossil. A fossil is the hardened remains or imprint of plants or animals from the distant past, preserved in rock.
Extinction
The death of all members of a species. Extinction. Extinction is when every individual of a species has died out and that species no longer exists on Earth.
Mimicry
An adaptation where an animal protects itself by looking like another animal. Mimicry. It is when one species resembles another to avoid predators and increase its chances of survival.
Inherited behavior
A behavior that is inborn, not learned. Inherited behavior. Inherited behavior is a natural action or reaction that an organism is born with, rather than acquiring it through experience.
Hibernate
To sleep during the cold winter when the animal has limited food supplies. Hibernate. Hibernate is when animals enter a deep sleep-like state to save energy during the winter.
