Wetland

An area of land that is periodically underwater

Real World Example

Imagine trying to maintain a garden in a yard that occasionally floods after heavy rain. Just like the garden, a wetland is an area that is sometimes dry but periodically submerged under water. In both cases, the fluctuating water levels create unique conditions: the garden's plants adapt to both dry and wet periods, just as the flora and fauna in a wetland are specially adapted to thrive in an environment that transitions between land and water.
