Imagine you're at a crowded party trying to catch the attention of someone across the room. In this scenario, just like certain traits improving mating success in sexual selection, wearing a uniquely bright outfit might make you stand out and catch their eye. Just as the bright outfit increases your chances of being noticed and potentially starting a conversation, certain traits in animals, like a peacock's vibrant tail, increase their chances of attracting a mate and passing those appealing traits to the next generation.
