Homologous Series

A group of compounds in which there is a constant increment change in molecular structure from one compound in the series to the next

Real World Example

Imagine trying to organize a bookshelf where each book is slightly taller than the last. This is similar to a homologous series in chemistry, where each compound differs from the next by a consistent, incremental change, just like each book differs by a small increase in height. Just as you can predict the height of the next book on the shelf based on the pattern, in a homologous series, you can predict the structure and properties of the next compound because they each increase by a specific unit, such as an extra CH2 group.
