Real World Example

During World War I, the convoy system was introduced as a method to protect troopships and merchant vessels from German submarines, known as U-boats. It was important because it significantly reduced the number of ships being sunk, ensuring that soldiers and essential supplies could safely reach their destinations. This system responded to the problem of U-boat attacks, which threatened to cut off vital resources and reinforcements. Today, the concept of traveling in groups for protection still matters in various forms, such as carpooling for safety or cycling in groups to be more visible to traffic. For example, when children walk to school together in a "walking bus," it helps keep them safe from traffic and stranger danger—showing how the convoy idea continues to protect people in everyday life.
