A substance made of one type of atom that cannot be broken down chemically

Real World Example

Imagine trying to separate a single color out of a crayon that is completely melted and mixed into one uniform shade. Just like you can't separate the original colors from the melted crayon because it is now one uniform substance, an element is a substance made of one type of atom that cannot be broken down chemically into a simpler substance. The crayon represents the element, where the uniform color is analogous to the single type of atom, and just as you can't extract individual colors from the melted crayon, you can't break down an element into anything simpler.
