A break in Earth's crust along which rocks move
Real World Example
Imagine you have a zipper on your jacket that occasionally gets stuck, causing one side to shift while the other remains in place. This is similar to a fault in Earth's crust, where a break causes rocks on either side to move relative to each other. Just as the zipper misalignment can cause the fabric to pull and create tension, a fault in the Earth's crust allows the rocks to slide past one another, sometimes leading to earthquakes.
