Caste
A form of social stratification based on hereditary status, endogamy and social barriers
Real World Example
In Ancient India, the caste system was a rigid social structure dividing people into groups or "varnas" based on birth, such as priests, warriors, merchants, and laborers. It was important because it organized society and dictated people's roles, duties, and who they could marry, which helped maintain social order. In China, a similar system called the "four occupations" categorized people into scholars, farmers, artisans, and merchants, also serving to structure society. Today, caste can still affect people, especially in countries like India, where it can influence job opportunities, marriage prospects, and social interactions. For example, someone from a lower caste might face discrimination or limited access to education, impacting their ability to succeed and feel accepted in society.
