Friction

The force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are touching

Real World Example

Imagine trying to push a heavy sofa across your living room carpet. Just as that carpet resists the movement of the sofa, friction is the force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact. The carpet fibers gripping the bottom of the sofa are like the microscopic bumps and grooves on surfaces that create friction, making it hard to slide the sofa, just as friction resists the movement of any object sliding over another surface.
