Heartwood

The older wood at the center of a tree trunk, it no longer conducts water

Real World Example

Imagine your smartphone battery that no longer holds a charge like it used to. Just like that aging battery, the heartwood in a tree is the older wood at the center that no longer conducts water. The heartwood is similar to that worn-out battery because both have served their purpose over time and have now transitioned to a new role; the heartwood provides structural support to the tree, while the battery still occupies space but no longer powers the device.
