The use of the reflection of sound waves to locate underwater objects
Real World Example
Imagine you're in a dark room trying to find your keys. Just as you might call out and listen for the sound to bounce back to help determine where objects are in the room, sonar uses the reflection of sound waves to locate underwater objects. In both scenarios, sound waves travel out, hit an object, and return, giving you clues about the object's location—whether it's your keys or a submarine.
