A break in Earth's crust along which rocks move

Real World Example

Imagine a zipper on your favorite jacket that gets stuck, causing one side to move out of alignment with the other. This is similar to a fault in Earth's crust where a break occurs, and rocks on either side move, just like the fabric on either side of the zipper. Just as the misaligned zipper teeth cause the jacket to split and move differently, a fault causes the Earth's crust to shift, with each side moving independently along the break.
